Sam Benzacar, of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his April 2024 newsletter that, along
with timely news items, features his short op−ed entitled "Expanding IoT Networks
Pose Increased Security Risk," where he reports on the current state of 5G and
the Internet of Things (IoT) world. He says there are 20 million IoT devices in
service now and an expected 27 million by 2025 (that's next year, believe it or
not!). The movement from wired to wireless began with Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular,
and even ZigBee to some extent. 5G's stated goal is to have the capability to totally
obviate the need for wired interconnections, be it for telephones, computers, security,
home appliances, industrial controls, or any other entity needing real-time communications
with something else. Of course most equipment requires a separate power supply from
batteries (with or without dedicated solar cell array, wind generator, etc.) or
the electric power distribution system. Along with the freedom from wires comes
subjection to malicious infiltration to collect data and/or to control the device
or system. It is an unfortunate fact that there is always someone or some group
intent of corrupting and harming others...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers
Power
Analyzers vs. Power Quality Analyzers, and how to select the correct one for
your application. Power and its quality from various supplies, such as charging
stations, must be established, and maintained through appropriate measurement cycles,
and power analyzers and power quality analyzers are among the best equipment for
regularly checking on power supplies and how well they are performing. The basic
difference between the types of units is that power analyzers measure power while
power quality analyzers measure the quality of power over time. Finding an AC/DC
electric power measurement solution can take time, due to the large assortment of
performance parameters associated with power and power quality. Fortunately, by
understanding the needs of an application for electric power, selection of the optimum
measurement tools for power analysis can be simplified and how well a power supply
meets the requirements of a particular electric load can be determined. Power analysis
involves measurements of key electrical parameters...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his March 2024 newsletter that, along
with timely news items, features his short op−ed entitled "5G Broadcast is Finally
Coming," where he reports on the progress recently made in fulfilling plans
finalized in the 2017 in 3GPP Release 14. "In a nutshell, 5G Broadcast makes it
possible to deliver high-bandwidth content to a massive audience concurrently without
compromising network performance." The whole 5G scheme is to have the capacity to
completely replace wired communications with wireless. That involves two-way data
transfers in the Gbps realm. My cable Internet connection is providing a download
speed of 590 Mbps and upload of 25 Mbps (upload speeds are severely throttled
for some reason), per SpeedTest.net. Using a cellphone as a mobile hotspot, I get
around 22 Mbps down and 12 Mbps up. Those numbers are dependent upon when
you happen to measure it, but I know they are typical of what I see. That represents
a wired connection 22x faster than wireless, but then my Galaxy S7 is not the best
platform to measure wireless performance. Finally, with 5G, people can watch an
8K UHD feature length movie on their phones while sitting in the stands at a ball
game or in a movie theater...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers the
way calibrators offer the precision needed to evaluate in-process testers and how
they can securely deliver test results to a control center to effectively manage
an industrial process. For effective process test
equipment calibration,
a calibrator must be a source of precisely controlled parameters as well as a highly
accurate measuring tool for evaluating the same parameters. A calibrator must often
inject a parameter, such as voltage, current, pressure, or temperature, into the
process equipment under test to determine the condition of the equipment. Traditionally,
data transfers to and from a calibrator were handled by dedicated communications
equipment. But growing demand for mobility and portability in calibrators capable
of in-field use has resulted in calibrators and communicators often within the same
package. When equipped with suitable communications interfaces, such as Ethernet
or Bluetooth, calibrator/communication devices can quickly and seamlessly make their
connections to the process equipment to be tested as well as to a control center...
Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his February 2024 newsletter that,
along with timely news items, features his short op−ed entitled "Satellites Join
Terrestrial 5G," in which he summarizes the state of the art for satellite direct
to cell[phone] (DTC) communications. The massive satellite constellations that are
beginning to clutter the night sky (and the day sky, but that doesn't matter much
to visible light astronomers) have orbits low enough to make signal travel time
latency negligible compared to the quarter second or so for geostationary satellites.
LEO satellites be at around 330 miles above sea level and geostationary be
at around 22,236 miles, so LEO latency is roughly 2% that of geosynchronous.
Of course the latency also depends on how far from the phone's zenith the satellite
lies. While data rates for the mini Earth stations with a parabolic dish are in
the neighborhood of 10-20 Mbps, for a cellphone the rates are good enough for
text messaging (SMS), but that's about it. It's considered by many to be an emergency
mode at this point in DTC communications...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers the
functions
of Spectrum and Network analyzers to better understand which type of test equipment
is better suited to support your project requirements. Instrumentation-level analyzers
come in many shapes and sizes, including as signal, spectrum, and network analyzers.
Knowing what each analyzer does will help find the best one for the job. Spectrum
analyzers measure signal magnitude as a function of frequency. They detect known
signals, such as radio waves, and unknown signals, such as interference and noise.
Spectrum analyzers work with antennas for over-the-air (OTA) measurements of wireless
communications signals and radar pulses. While signal and spectrum analyzers offer
extensive measurement results on OTA signals, they lack the capabilities of network
analyzers (NAs) for studying the effects of electronic networks on signals...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his January 2024 newsletter that,
along with timely news items, features his short op−ed entitled "Shadow Warriors:
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Reshape the Battlefield." In it, he discusses how drones
(aka Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) are rapidly replacing human presence in war fighting.
These semiautonomous surveillance and/or weapons delivery platforms are at the leading
edge of technology, and unlike their flesh and blood counterparts, have no conscience
or fear. Sort of like with the V−1 Buzz Bombs that the Nazis sent to rain down indiscriminate
terror on London during the early days of World War II, these UAVs do not provide
much advance notice. These large drones have noisy internal combustion or jet engines
that can at least be heard a short ways off. I wonder whether any of the highly
classified system elements from RQ-170 UAV that the Iranians hijacked in 2011 were
incorporated into the drone that just killed three American soldiers and wounded
many others? I still don't know why we didn't bomb the @(%^(@$ out of them at the
time. Instead, we delivered >$400M in cash...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers how
changing temperatures affects electronic performance and how practical temperature
testing often relies upon having a
temperature chamber capable of changing a wide range of temperatures. Electronic
products are designed for use within specific temperature ranges, according to application,
such as aerospace, automotive, commercial, industrial, medical, and military systems.
Temperature chambers provide the means of controlling temperatures during testing;
and a good chamber can adjust temperatures over a wide range and within a tight
tolerance. Temperature chambers can be sorted by size, weight, and temperature.
Smaller units are ideal for local use, next to a workbench, although the size of
their environmental chambers will limit the size and type of DUT. Larger temperature
chambers do not have the same placement flexibility, but they can handle larger
and more DUTs. Temperature chambers have two key sets of dimensions...
