Software Defined Radio (SDR) & Cognitive Radio
Manufacturers & Services

Software Defined Radio (SDR) has taken the communications world by storm in the last decade. SDR attempts to minimize the amount of fixed, non-reconfigurable content in a radio and to maximize the amount of reconfigurable content. At first, doing so meant using digital signal processing (DSP) technology to handle the detection, demodulation, and processing of RF signals, but still relying on fixed front end circuits and antennas for initial reception. Now, as integrated circuit (IC) technology gets ever faster and more sophisticated, at sub-microwave frequencies the incoming signals are being sampled and downconverted without the need for mixers, local oscillators, filter banks, and associated circuitry. Even fixed antennas are sometimes being replaced with electronically steered phased arrays - in some cases integrated right onto the IC.

Cognitive radio exploits the capability provided by SDR to add an intelligent, adaptive nature to operations. It is capable of learning how to most effectively use its features and reconfiguring modes of operation to be the most effective and efficient. These are exciting times in the radio realm.

It is difficult to find vendors who make devices specifically marketed as SDR components, but most of the top name and even a lot of specialty companies are slowly listing SDR and cognitive radio as potential applications for their products.
