# Temperature Unit Conversions

There are four basic temperature scales in use: Fahrenheit, Celsius, Rankine, and Kelvin. The Fahrenheit scale defined water freezing at 32 degrees and boiling at 212 degrees. Celsius defines water freezing at 0 degrees and boiling at 100 degrees. Kelvin defines zero degrees at absolute zero (no thermal motion), and uses the Celsius degree as an increment. Rankine defines zero as absolute zero (no thermal motion) like with Kelvin, only Rankine uses the Fahrenheit degree increment. Temperature conversions

Here are the formulas for converting between the units.

 Celsius to Fahrenheit Fahrenheit to Celsius ºC = ºF - 32       1.8 ºF = (1.8 ºC) + 32 Fahrenheit to Rankine Celsius to Kelvin ºR = ºF + 459.67-40ºC = -40ºF K = ºC + 273.15
