Crosley 03CB Floor Console Radio Photos

A few days ago, Mr. Tim O. sent me photos of the Crosley model 03CB console (floor) radio his mother owns and which he remembers listening to as a kid. Tim says as far as he knows the radio still works. As can be seen in the images below, it is still in pretty good condition for a 75-year-old radio. Maybe the reason is because, as Tim says, "Not perfect, but if we touched it growing up we got in trouble." LOL! If my 03CB had been in that condition, I would not have bothered stripping it down for a total refinish job.

I noticed that both the volume and tuning knobs appear to be a bit melted, which must have been a common occurrence in this model because the Crosley 03CB radio that I recently bought and restored also had melted volume and tuning knobs. The metal chassis must have gotten extremely hot to cause that, with the heat being conducted to the metal shafts. It is unlikely that the volume control potentiometer got hot enough to melt its knob, and the tuning shaft is connected to a flywheel with dial cord running around it, so no heat is generated there. Fortunately, I was able to buy a set of remanufactured inner and outer knobs for mine.
